Back-to-School Clothing Shopping Checklist
Separate required uniform, spare clothes and everyday extras before shopping.
Back-to-school shopping becomes simpler when required items are separated from optional extras. Begin with the school's current list rather than an old checklist. Uniform rules, sports kit and spare-clothing arrangements can differ between schools and age groups.
Read the official list
Record required colours, styles, footwear and any approved supplier information. Check whether a cardigan, sweatshirt or other layer must meet a specific design. Casualwear should not be treated as a uniform substitute unless the school permits it.
Try on what you already have
Check tops, trousers and layers with the child standing and seated. Look at sleeve length, waistband comfort and hems. Make a repair pile for items with fixable issues and a replacement list for genuine fit or condition problems.
Build three shopping groups
- Required: missing uniform and activity items from the school list.
- Practical spares: changes requested by the school or caregiver.
- Optional casualwear: clothes for school trips, permitted events and after-school use.
Plan quantities around laundry
Count how many school days pass before clean clothes are available again, including drying time. Add spare changes according to your child's normal needs. Avoid a fixed quantity that ignores your household's washing routine.
Update measurements before ordering
Use a comfortable current garment as the reference, recording flat chest width, top length, relaxed waistband width and trouser length. Check whether the product page uses the same measurement method. Do not assume that the next age label will automatically fit.
Prepare items before term starts
Try new clothes on, review the school's labelling instructions and keep any necessary exchange packaging. Put spare sets together so they are easy to find. Check current delivery estimates if ordering close to the first day.
Use QC's children's measurement guide and growing children's shopping guide to keep the list focused.
