How to Measure Trousers Before Ordering Online

The most useful size reference is often a pair of trousers you already enjoy wearing. Labels vary between brands, and two garments marked with the same size can have different cuts. Comparing like-for-like garment measurements gives you more information than choosing by age or size label alone.

Prepare your reference pair

Choose trousers with a similar style and stretch to the item you want to buy. Fasten the button or zip, empty the pockets and lay the garment flat on a firm surface. Smooth out wrinkles without pulling the fabric. Use one unit throughout, either centimetres or inches.

Record these five measurements

• Waist: measure straight across the relaxed waistband. Double this flat width only if the listing gives a circumference. For elastic waists, distinguish relaxed width from a comfortably stretched measurement.
• Hip: measure across the widest part of the seat, noting where you measured. Different sellers may use different positions.
• Front rise: measure from the crotch seam to the top of the front waistband.
• Inseam: follow the inner leg seam from crotch to hem.
• Overall length: measure down the outer side from the waistband to the hem.

Compare the same measurement method

A body waist measurement and a flat garment width are different figures. Before comparing, check whether the product listing describes the body or the garment, whether the waistband is relaxed, and whether the length includes the waistband. Small differences can reflect the way fabric is laid out, so ask for clarification if the method is unclear.

Check comfort as well as size

If your reference pair feels tight when sitting, copying its measurements will copy that problem. Consider room at the thigh, seat and knee, and whether you prefer a closer or more relaxed leg. Stretch fabric can feel different from a woven pair with the same flat dimensions.
