How to Store Winter Clothes Between Seasons

Putting winter clothes away is a good time to check what your household actually uses. A little preparation can make the next wardrobe change easier and stop forgotten fit problems becoming rushed purchases later. Follow each garment's own care instructions throughout.

Check before packing

Empty pockets and inspect seams, hems, cuffs and fastenings. Separate garments needing repair from those ready to store. Set aside clothes that no longer fit so they do not return to the usable wardrobe by mistake next season.

Clean and dry appropriately

The American Cleaning Institute recommends cleaning seasonal clothes before storage and making needed repairs. Use the garment's care directions and make sure it is fully dry before putting it away. Do not choose one washing or drying setting for an entire mixed-fabric wardrobe.

Choose a suitable storage space

Use a clean, dry area and suitable containers or garment storage for the items involved. Avoid overpacking pieces so tightly that they are difficult to organise or inspect. Check the space periodically rather than assuming stored clothes need no further attention.

Group items usefully

  • Separate each family member's clothing.
  • Keep similar garment types together.
  • Label the contents clearly.
  • Record items needing repair or replacement.
  • Keep a useful layer accessible if you may need it before the next season.

Make a small inventory

A note such as “two usable sweatshirts, one pair of trousers to replace” is more useful than an unclear bag marked winter clothes. For children, record the current labelled sizes and date, while remembering that fit will need checking again later.

Review before shopping next season

Bring the stored clothes out and try them on before buying. A garment in good condition may still need replacing because of growth or changed preferences. Use current measurements rather than the old inventory alone.
